Art and Functionality

Art and FunctionalityFor some web designers, developing a website is an art project. For others, it’s a technology problem. For The Computer Spirit, a website doesn’t pass muster unless it looks great, works perfectly, and tells the client’s story.

For us, details matter. Navigation must be clear and intuitive for the visitor. Links must work. Words should be spelled correctly. Images ought to be presented in a consistent manner. Things should line up. We believe that visitors pick up a lot about a website subconsciously and may judge the author, healer, or organization subconsciously as well.

For The Computer Spirit, beauty and elegance are important. Images must catch the viewer’s eye and tell a story in a moment’s glance. Fonts need to match the tone of the content. Colors should be coordinated. The feeling the viewer gets from their first moment on the site must match the feeling of the story being told.

Look around this website. See if you can notice the details. Before you do, try to describe the feeling you get from the website and see if you think it matches the story The Computer Spirit is telling you.

Simple

It’s possible to pack way too much stuff on a web page. We see it all the time. The Computer Spirit says life is already too complicated. Let’s focus on the important. Let’s just tell the story. Let’s make it fun and attractive. Let’s make the site easy to use.

And then let’s stop.

Joyce asks “What’s the simplest way to convey this story graphically?” Roger asks “How can we convey this story in the fewest number of words?” Then, if we missed something, we can always add a bit to emphasize or clarify.
