Nifty Constant Contact Product Updates

Constant Contact is always looking to make product enhancements, and it has made some really nifty ones recently. Something I’ve been waiting for – literally for years – is the ability to save an e-newsletter as a file. Well, it’s here – read on about some of  the recent Constant Contact product updates!

Constant Contact product updates

Save to a file: Now you can save your email campaign as a PDF, JPG, or PNG file. Options are also available for page size, page orientation, and more.

Computer vs Mobile Device Opens: Metrics now allow you to see how much of your readership is viewing your e-newsletter on their desktop and on a mobile device. Overall, stats are showing that people who send out e-newsletters in the early part of the day, viewed them on desktops; later in day, mobile devices.

Other Constant Contact product updates include-

  • Rename your campaign: Now you rename an email even after you’ve sent it!
  • Save as template: Sure, you can copy a sent email to use for another mailing, but now you can actually save it as a template.
  • More free images: 2,500 free images have been added to the stock library.

If you’re using another email marketing service and it’s not giving you these capabilities, perhaps it’s time to move over to Constant Contact. Feel free to contact me to learn more about the features and benefits of using Constant Contact.

Tracking Email Opens

Have you ever had this question too: My contact opened my email. Why don’t I see their email address in the email’s opens report? Let’s talk about tracking email opens and how Constant Contact handles this.

Your email opens report lets you know who opened your email and when, but it’s not always 100% accurate.

Constant Contact can only detect and record when your contact opens your email if at least one of the following happens:

  •  Tracking Email OpensInvisible Tracking Image Displays – CC embeds an invisible image at the very top of every email you send. When someone opens your email, that image loads and sends data back to CC to let them know the email was opened.
  • Contact Clicks a Link – If the hidden open tracking image doesn’t display, CC can still detect that the email was opened if any link is clicked. The link’s URL has to begin with http://, rather than with the https:// secure form.

Constant Contact Can’t Track When a Contact Opens Your Email If They…

Collect Contacts by Text Message

Collect Contacts by Text Set up a Text-to-Join keyword to collect contacts by text message!

Constant Contact’s Text-to-Join is a free tool to help contacts join your mailing list by text message – no computer required!

Set up a free text messaging keyword and promote it at your events or place of business. Your keyword will work on most U.S. phone carriers and is only available in the U.S.

Here’s how it works:

  1. A contact sends a text message to your keyword.
  2. Your keyword sends a reply back, asking for the contact’s email address.
  3. The contact replies with an email address and is saved to your chosen contact list.
  4. Your keyword sends back a thank-you message to your new contact.

With text messaging so popular these days, it’s a quick and easy way to build your list of contacts.

Email as a Business Practice

Email as a Business PracticeIn their “Top 50 Email Marketing Solutions,” Website Magazine named Constant Contact the #1 Email Marketing solution. Read what they have to say about email as a business practice and how results compare with social media, etc. [Emphasis below is mine.]

Email, as a business practice, has matured. No longer do marketers “batch and blast;” they understand the value the medium has in relationship building and generating conversions – increasingly leveraging technologies, tactics and techniques to make it work.

Social, SEO and digital advertising still manage to capture the majority of ‘Net professionals’ attention, but the evidence is clear – you should send more (and better) email.

In its State of Search Marketing Report, Econsultancy and SEMPO revealed that 66 percent of marketers rate email’s ability to deliver a return on investment (ROI) as “excellent” or “good,” while only 41 percent feel the same way about social media marketing. What’s more, Marketing Sherpa found that companies sending more than 100,000 emails per month see a 94 percent return on investment. Even more impressive, companies sending less than 100,000 emails per month see a 139 percent return. Whatever the volume of messages sent, know in your digital heart that email works.

simon sez“I recently attended a hands-on workshop on the topic of Creating Your Constant Contact Newsletter. The 2 1/2 hr. workshop flew by. The class was small which gave the participants the opportunity to ask lots of questions and receive personal attention. The workshop was very practical and the content was immediately useful. I attended the workshop with specific goals in mind and most of them were realized.

Joyce Kaye is a good teacher who is patient when it comes to helping participants over the bumps in the road. She has a great sense of humor and the work was fun. I left with a deeper sense of the topic than I had when I began the workshop. The information that Joyce shared was just what I was hoping to learn. Joyce created a workshop that was non-threatening with a topic that can be threatening. I hope to attend other workshops with Joyce because I know I will learn a lot and have fun in the process.”

How to Approach Your Email Reports with Confidence

[Excerpted from a blog post by Miranda Paquet]

If you’re sending email out through Constant Contact, you have access to helpful email reports that show you how your emails are performing, what’s working for you, and where you can improve.

email reports

Here are the five most important areas you should focus on:

  • Opens: You can view the percentage of contacts that opened your email, as well as a specific list of everyone who opened each message.
  • Click-through rate: Your click-through rate shows you how people are actually engaging with the content in your email. You can view which contacts clicked your links, then target them with follow-up emails.
  • Bounce rate: Emails can bounce for a number of reasons, including invalid email addresses, a full inbox, or out of office statuses. Keeping an eye on your bounces will help you to remove any addresses with ongoing issues and maintain high deliverability rates.
  • Spam: If an individual on your email list reports your email as unwanted or unsolicited, it will be marked as spam. The best way to ensure a low spam rate is to practice permission-based email marketing.
  • Opt-out: An opt-out occurs when one of your contacts no longer wants to receive your emails and unsubscribes from your list. A few opt-outs are normal from time to time, but you should pay attention to this number to make sure your emails are not turning people away often.

Now, think about what these numbers are really telling you… Here are some common questions you might be tackling, and advice for how your reports can help.

1. Is my audience engaged?
Focus on: Opens

2. Are my emails inspiring people to take action?
Look at: Clicks

3. Are my emails reaching the right people?
Pay attention to: Bounces, Spam

4. Am I doing anything to turn people away?
Watch your: Opt-outs

If email reports seem overwhelming at first, start using them a little at a time. Not only are email reports far from intimidating, they’re some of the most valuable marketing tools you have available.
