A Whopping e-News Open Rate!

Verde Valley Caregivers e-News January 14, 2012When it comes to open rates, my e-news clients usually score in at least the low 30 percentile – above industry averages, in case you didn’t know. Click here to view the latest industry rates.

When I’ve sent out an e-news to a small, very targeted list, I can easily get an open rate of 50%, sometimes even 100%! But, let’s be honest – when you’re talking about 10 to 20 people, that’s really no big deal.

However, now we have the case of the latest e-news sent to volunteers at Verde Valley Caregivers Coalition.  VVCC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing direct services free-of-charge throughout the Verde Valley (AZ) to ‘neighbors’ – seniors and adults with disabilities who ask for help to remain living independently at home.

Out of 203 email addresses (bounces already excluded), VVCC enjoyed an open rate of a whopping 55.2% or 112 contacts! That says a mouthful.

So to what do we attribute this awesome open rate?

How Can I Get More Contacts to Open My Emails?

If you have viewed your open rate, and it doesn’t compare to your industry’s average open rates, you might want to improve it.  To increase your open rate, you need to re-evaluate three things:

1. Content
2. Delivery day and time
3. Contact list quality and age

Let’s explore these a bit more…

1. Check your content:

  • Use a recognizable “From” name. Make sure you use a “From” name and address that includes your name, company, product, or service name – whichever the recipient will know best. When you repeatedly brand the “From” line like this over time, you assure the recipient that the email is coming from a reliable and trusted source and builds familiarity and credibility. (more…)

A Favorite Customer

Humane Society of SedonaJoyce and Roger approached the Humane Society offering their email marketing services at no cost as part of their mission. What a positive impact they made! We now are taking advantage of social media and reaching many more people on a regular basis than ever before. For the first time we personally invited all of our customers to a big event through an inexpensive but professional on-line process. It all has been extremely effective. Both Joyce and Roger make us feel like their favorite customer, with their coaching, patience and avid interest in our projects. Their attention to detail and their knowledge of the how, when and whys of social marketing has allowed us to leap forward into the 21st century. Thank you, Joyce and Roger! – Diane Greathouse, Humane Society of Sedona [View archive of e-newsletters.]

Benefits of Email Marketing

As your business community grows from your very first client to ten – then a hundred – then five hundred – how will you stay in touch? How will you reach out in a personal way to let them know what you’re up to – how you can help them today?

For the first couple clients, you can send them a thank-you card. When you get up to a hundred, you can probably send each a birthday card. But what about the other 364 days of the year?

Email is great – you can quickly jot down your news or your ideas, push the send button, and you’ve touched all five hundred. On the very morning of your new idea.

But wait, you don’t need to send that idea to everyone you know – it’s an idea that only makes sense to ten percent of the people you know. No problem. You just create separate email lists that distinguish between client groups – one for volunteers, one for donors – or one for in-kind contributors, one for people who donate clothing to your thrift shop, one for large cash donors, one for those who acknowledge your organization in their wills. Then you can send the same idea in four versions that are relevant to those particular readers. (more…)

Event Marketing

Almost every one of you will be involved in managing an event to promote what you do. That includes the celebration party!

Now, you can use your e-newsletter account to send invitations, manage your send-to list, and receive RSVPs.

Why not use the contact database you’re already using for your e-newsletters?

Why not send out your invitation in the same format your contacts are used to receiving from you?

Why not use the same back office you use to create, send, and track e-newsletters to perform the same functions for your event? (more…)

What is Email Marketing?

e-newsletter "Reaching Out"Email Marketing is another way of saying “e-newsletter.” It’s the easy, effective, and affordable way to reach out to and stay in touch with your business community.

We’re not talking about gmail or Outlook here. We’re talking about attractive, professional-looking email communications to stay in regular touch with clients, donors, volunteers, and prospects to build strong customer relationships. It’s better and more effective than regular email.

Marketing research suggests that it’s WAY more expensive to acquire a new client than to continue providing products and services to clients who’ve already chosen you. Like nine times as expensive. You do a lot of work to get in front of a prospect so you can offer something of value. When that prospect indicates their desire to do business with you, or at least carry on a conversation with you, it behooves you to build that new relationship – and keep building it.

You can use plain old emails to do that. It works. Unless you’re sending to more than a hundred people – then you might have a spamming issue. (more…)
