As you may know, I changed my world view and came to believe in God/Spirit/The Presence – my Higher Power – via synchronicity. Coined by Carl Jung, synchronicity points to an acausal connecting principle, thus making ‘coincidences’ hold a meaningful connection or link to reality for the person involved.
As Rog and I progress in rebirthing our business and leave behind a regular paycheck, fear of doing the right thing and being financially sustained (at the minimum) had started to creep into my psyche. With my faith lacking, I sure needed some sign – uh hum, signs – that we were on the right path and would prosper. Our beautiful spring-green grasshopper (you may have read about him in Rog’s recent edition of “Reaching Out”) who’d been ‘living’ with us since before July 4th, proved to play a key role in increasing my faith and peace.
We finally got to research our little fella after we saw his shedded skin sitting on the Black-eyed Susan flower. Many synchronistic events have transpired since then and sharing them hopefully will give you a sense of the wonderment and deliciousness of it all. And, perhaps it will inspire you, grow your belief that something much greater than we is running this universe.
It turns out that our original friend was but a ‘nymph’, evolving into an adult, growing darker in color, and acquiring its wings.
We learned too, that as a Chinese symbol, the grasshopper offers attributes that include longevity, happiness, good health, good luck, wealth, and abundance. In Ancient Greece, the grasshopper was a status symbol. Native American grasshopper symbolism deals with messages of glad tidings and harbinger of good news. So far, so good.
The grasshopper moves to its own rhythm and tune, indicating it is an advocate of intuition and listening to our inner voices. The grasshopper keeps itself to the ground and thus can teach us stability, patience, security, and solidarity. I welcome all of those attributes!
The grasshopper chooses those of us who are innovators, forward-thinkers, and those who progress in life by unorthodox methods recognizing great leaps of faith, jumps in progress and consistent forward momentum. One is likely to aim high, and achieve amazing feats, taking grand leaps where others fear to do so. We can call upon the grasshopper when we need a sense of adventure in our lives.
Green is the color associated with the heart chakra, and once again, symbolizes harmony, creativity, health, abundance and nature. And, let’s not forget the obvious: the color of money is green.
The next morning, our adult grasshopper was gone.
Early that evening, on the way to throwing out the garbage, which is usually Rog’s task, I came upon a beautiful green (!) scarab beetle with iridescent features. It was not lost on me at all that Jung’s most famous case of synchronicity in psychotherapy was with a woman patient who recited a dream she had had about a golden scarab piece of jewelry.
The following morning, on my walk, I asked Spirit for one more sign, admitting I really didn’t need it, but would welcome it. Upon arriving home, Rog pointed to the garden patio door – there was our grasshopper friend back home, and the 3rd sign from Spirit!
My morning readings have added to this synchronicity, including a Daily Word “Worry-Free” which quoted a favorite scripture: “Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?” – Luke 12:25. Then a Unity teacher’s writing included “With God as your ever-present guide, do not fear anything or anyone. Be serene and confident because God is with you. You are not alone.”
And, on and on it goes. My faith and trust have been greatly strengthened, and I feel confident that Rog and I are headed in the right direction in our business and in service. I am so grateful for this fun and meaningful way Spirit communicates and assures me, reminding me I am not alone.

Dear Joyce,
Thank you for writting me back.
I am based in Msia, so it is really quite a distance between us, yes? But somehow, technology enables us to connect.
As I hv never seen grasshopper of this size, and as I have not really been doing good and that at the same time I am getting into spirituality, I goggled on web to search for significance of grasshopper and found your site.
There are many writtings on grasshopper, with most of them pointing towards good signs, so this is good. But somehow, I really do not know if I should attribute this as simply coincidence.
But then, again, according to what I have learn from spirituality (Tibetan Buddism), nothing is coincidence. Anyway, after 2 days of goggling, I have to convince myself to end this search and tell myself that everything will be ok.
Let me share with you 2 examples: One night I had a dream about a relative (who is still alive) who pass away, I saw the coffin with relatives surrounding her with myself standing somewhere witnessing the event. That was somewhere early this year. Well, if you check on web, this is a good sign…So far I have yet to come across things that I wanted…Positive changes in my life.
Sometimes later, there has been perhaps 3 times I came across cars that hold the same car number plate as the one that I have driven before. So is spirits trying to tell me that something good is coming? Well, again, nothing………
At the end of the day, perhaps we all have to rely on 2 things – one is spirituality and the other being actual work. When i say ‘actual work’, it means we really have to work hard to get to where we want. Why I say spirituality? Because there is always someone higher than us as humans that are controlling what is happening, whether we like it or not.
Happy Thanksgiving day to you too. I read from your site that you are starting your business and certainly it will not be easy.
I wonder, if you can share with me, any good has come to you after your grasshopper experience back in July? I am excited to know…:)
Dear Sheryl;
Thank you for your good wishes. Thanksgiving Day was lovely… It was a joy to gather with friends and family dear to my heart, hold meaningful conversation, express gratitude, share music – in essence, feel connected in The One.
Yes, isn’t it wonderful the good that can come from technology: connecting individuals across the globe, making this vast world feel smaller and helping us feel we’re not alone at any time of the day or night.
There has been plenty of good in my life since July, although not in striking it rich in dollars! With the revamping of one of our businesses, Spirit has introduced us to a lot of wonderful people, who have enriched our life in a myriad of ways. We have been able to be of service as well as gain private, paying clients. We’re doing exciting work that is meaningful to us and beneficial to others. Personal relationships have improved and I’m taking better care of myself too.
I came to believe in a Higher Power about 22 years ago (through synchronicity), and my entire world view shifted dramatically. I have learned that I am never alone – Spirit is barely a breath away, as well as so many people are only too eager to help others. Staying in the present moment, in the Now, keeps fear at bay. And, when feeling down or the like, asking “How important is this in the grand scheme of things?” helps move me to a healthier, more joyful perspective.
I thought I’d share with you a quote about spirituality:
“In essence, spirituality is simply living with the intention to realize God in every circumstance of your being – your thoughts, emotions, words, deeds, relations, aspirations – in short, the totality of your life, right to its very end.” – John White. That’s what I strive to do.
You might want to check out my spirituality blog at http://www.joyceskaye.com. I’ve not written in it regularly for a while, and I want to categorize it, but it’s always uplifting for me to go back and read. Perhaps you’ll find it helpful.
Sending you blessings, Sheryl, across the times zones, Joyce
Here Thanksgiving is not that popular, well, Asian countries anyway. But I am glad that you had a great day with your friends.
So, based on what you have encountered, you believe that the grasshopper is the messenger to you for all the good things that come after? This is a nice thing to know (see, I am still looking for evidences, hopeless me.) But then, I am glad that many positive things come to your life after the appearance of that little grasshopper.
As said, I just come to learn spirituality about a year ago, my life has changed as well, gradually. Since you are a spiritual person, I would like to share with you a place called Findhorn, somehere in Europe. A lady there can communicate with spirits, and it is with this that they manage to grow many things out of impossible, including instances of having roses grow from stone and and a cabbages that grow out of dessert that weight a few pounds. Goggle on their website and you will read more.
I have goggled on your website, as it is not categorised, it is a bit hard to find info that I would like to read on. But it is ok, you said you are going to categorise it, ya?
In buddism, we believe in Karma, what goes around comes around. Although it is easy to say then done, I try to do good, so that the goods will come to me eventually…
I wish you great happiness and success in many aspects of your life………:)
It is delight to be able to connect with you, Sheryl. I think there are many messengers who bring good tidings, lessons to learn, the feeling of Spirit’s Presence; in July, one of them turned out to be a grasshopper. My husband, Roger Wyer, is especially familiar with Findhorn, although he’s never been there; fascinating and exciting if you ask me! Thanks for your interest in my blog on spirituality. I’ve added a search box to assist the reader until I can get the categories up – thanks for propelling me to do so
. Blessings, Joyce
Nice to hear from you again….
I come to know Findhorn through my spiritual guidance – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche. Findhorn is a very special place, amazing things happening there….
I am glad and equally surprised that through this kind of random blog reading, I can come across people who can be so spiritually inclined, you and your husband – Roger. I am amazed that a guy can be so fascinated and excited by spirituality.
I wish both you and Roger well, in many aspects of your lives……..:)
Keep in touch..:)
Best wishes.
I’ve been on a conscious spiritual path for 22+ years now, and it seems there are many more guys into spirituality these days – I am grateful
. And, Sedona, Arizona -where we live- is considered a very spiritual place (although Rog and I met on match.com when we were living elsewhere). We’ll be in touch… See you on Facebook!
Would like to share here that just yesterday there was a grasshoper that came into my room as well. It was a green one and it was big.
This is rather unusual for me and I would like to see this as a sign of good luck…after many years of down periods.
I have never seen a grasshopper this big.
Well, just like you I am getting into spirituality, so I am kind of sensitive towards things that may be trying to give me signs…
I hope these grasshoppers that came into our lives are indeed little creatures that tried to send us messenges that we will be fine….
Take care.
Dear Sheryl; Thanks so very much for writing! It gave me the opportunity to read once again about that synchronistic experience way back in July. And, it was synchronistic – yes, synchronistic – that you read and wrote when you did, for I needed to be reminded about the abundance Spirit wants us to have as this month the cash flow is not measuring up to meet expenses. And, that, in turn, is synchronistic, for today is Thanksgiving Day! I DO believe all of the aforementioned was no coincidence
. Thanks for lifting me up, and I hope that it was mutual. Have a VERY Happy Thanksgiving. Blessings, Joyce
